Standards for Blog Promotion and Commenting
A while back Krum posted some hat tipping guidelines for blog users.
In that spirit I'm pleased to present:
The American Society for Testing and Materials' Standards for Blog Promotion and Commenting:
1. General Principle: While it is common practice to leave comments on popular blogs with the hopes of having your own blog recognized for the work of genius that it is, it is unacceptable to comment on a bloc post with the sole purpose of promoting your own blog.
Example 1 (Relevant links - Acceptable): Comment on a post about coffee: "Shifra, I love coffee too! Check out the cartoon I drew of me drinking coffee over on my blog!" (Link included in comment.)
Example 2 (Name dropping - Acceptable): Comment on a post about Slugs: "Ewww slugs!"
(signature includes blog address)
Example 3 (shameless Self-Promotion- Not Acceptable): Hey Shifra, check out my blog it's AWESOME!! (Link included in comment.)
Example 4 (Spam - Not Acceptable): Looking to buy lamps - check out Bernie's house of lamps! It's AWESOME!!! (link included in comment.)
In conclusion if you want your blog promoted start leaving clever, on topic, comments around the blogesphere or just go the direct route and email bloggers you like with your blog's address. If they like what they see they will link to you. Shameless self promotion is definitely not the way to attract long term readers.

What's wrong with spam?
Oh, right. It treyfe.
My question is how you and orthomom manage to get by with so little spam seeing as you have no word verification. I hate the word verification stuff but had to enable it on my blog ;) because I was getting so much spam. You guys are much more popular than I am, so what gives?
(p.s. that wasn't a "shameless plug", was it?)
shifra, standards will not stop the barbarians at the door. heck, on my blog i'm thrilled to have anyone read it. oh, wait, do you think they didn't even read it before leaving their off-topic comments? sigh.
I get little spam, but I also get few comments. I think I bore the spammers.
So in other words, any comment with the word "AWESOME!!!!!" is unacceptable ;-)
I - and I mean I ;) - don't mind when people link related posts that are on topic.
But there are few gray areas. The jerks will constantly self-promote, while the rest of us try to build a base through content. :::sigh:::
I'm sorry Steg, that post is unacceptable. :)
I don't get many comments either. But I do try to stay on topic if I am commenting at other sites, it usually bugs me when there are off topic comments.
Ayelet- I don't know the secret to reduced spam. I THINK that spam is targeted to specific keywords used on blogs. Maybe you just use more trigger words than I do.
I also delete most of the spam I get as soon as I see it.
I am very hesitant to use the word verification because I am mildly dyslexic (really) and find it very difficult to use myself.
Awww Eliyahu... that comment was sad and clever enough to get you some mercy clicks at least...
Mirty - geek humor is always welcome - hehe. I love that you are an artsy geek, like me!
Ezzie - very cute. How do you imbed clickable links into comments, I've never been able to figure that one out!!
As for you Krum and Little Wolf - maybe your posts are just so well thought out and complete there is nothing more to add, just read and enjoy.
Steg- AWESOME!!!! I'm still laughing over the use of "BOFFING" on your blog speaking of somewhat inappropriate blog words...
You know how you can click "Blog this" button and a blogger pop-up comes up? A link is diplayed in html code. Copy and paste it into your comment. You can change what appears if you wish by typing over the stuff between > and <. If you don't know what I'm talking about, ask me again.
Shifra: Like this -
$a href="http://URLyouwanttolinkto.com">Whatever you want to write$/a>
Which, if you'd put a < instead of $ would give you...
Best Answers J-Blog Ever!
Boffing, shmoffing.
You're not going to go all "swords are literary phallic symbols" on us are you? :-P
